Careers at Holbrook School for Autism

At Holbrook School for Autism we provide a relevant and engaging careers curriculum that is tailored to meet the differing needs and requirements of our students. Exposure to work and work related activities is a significant step in preparing our students for adulthood. It supports the development of personal and social skills as well as key employability skills that students will need for the world of work.

 

There are four main curriculum areas that our careers programme is linked. These are:

 

  • Education and employment
  • Independence
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Friendships, relationships and community

 

We use the Gatsby Benchmarks to support ongoing development of our careers provision and enable access to a range of education and training providers for our students from years 8-14.

Employability, Qualifications and Training

At our FE Belper site we challenge students to be the best that they can be. Our ultimate aim is for each individual to transition from us with the skills and tools needed to move on to their next steps. Our curriculum is highly personalised and focuses on supporting students to become more independent in all aspects of their lives.

As part of our careers programme, all students have the opportunity to meet with an independent careers adviser. Students have the opportunity to engage in work experience placements, visits to other education and training establishments to raise awareness and understanding of what opportunities are available to them. All students will access learning through a range of work related activities and develop key skills appropriate to the workplace, further education and next steps.

All students will take part in enterprise projects to further support the development of skills required in the workplace and in adult life. Enterprise projects can range from creating and running a horticultural business to working in our enterprise café. All money generated is reinvested into enterprise projects.

All students will work towards QCF qualifications at the Belper site. Qualifications include employability, enterprise and life and living skills. Students may also undertake qualifications linked to a specific area of employment such as food hygiene.
