Work-Related Learning and Business Enterprise
We believe that work-related learning is an essential part of preparing our pupils
for the ‘opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life’. Our work-related
and enterprise programmes begin for pupils at Key Stage 1 and provide our pupils
with the skills to engage in relevant further education, employment or training on
leaving school. Work-related learning and enterprise programmes provide a meaningful
context in which all pupils at HCA develop such key skills as ‘working with others’,
‘problem-solving’ and ‘financial capability’ whilst the quality of access to National
Curriculum subjects such as Mathematics, ICT and Art and Design is enhanced. Pupils
gain practical experience in a wide range of careers and work contexts and have increased
opportunities to generalise their learning. Enterprise projects such as designing,
making and selling pet bedding, t-shirts and hanging baskets have enabled pupils
of all ages to make choices and gain a genuine understanding of their own skills
and abilities. Profits made have been spent on resources for the classroom and trips
to amusements parks and the sea-side. Older students enjoy learning at colleges,
engaging in gardening and woodland projects and they provide a valued workforce for
a local factory.
